48 Hours in Arundel: Our Ideal Weekend Itinerary
Where to eat, wander and unwind in West Sussex’s most charming market town
Just an hour and a half from London and nestled at the edge of the South Downs National Park, Arundel is one of those rare places that manages to feel both lively and peaceful - historic and effortlessly cool.
Whether you're here for long walks, antiques, great food or just a slow weekend away, here’s how we’d spend 48 hours in this beautiful riverside town (and yes, this is the actual itinerary we would suggest to guests staying at River Road).
Friday Evening: Arrival & First Sips
After checking into your flat (hopefully with us!), take a moment to drop your bags and settle in. Our place is just a short walk from the town centre, so no need to jump back in the car.
Dinner recommendation:
Start the weekend with a relaxed bite and a glass of wine at The Parsons Table — one of Arundel’s top restaurants, known for beautiful plates made with seasonal ingredients. Be sure to book ahead, especially on weekends.
Too tired for a sit-down meal? Grab a wood-fired pizza from La Campania and take it back to the flat.
Saturday: Castles, Coffee & Countryside
Morning
Start your day with breakfast at Juniper, a cosy café just off the High Street, where everything from pastries to porridge is served with a smile (and a proper flat white).
After breakfast, it’s time for the main event:
Arundel Castle, one of the most iconic and well-preserved castles in the UK. Wander through grand rooms, take in the views from the battlements, and if it's spring or summer, don’t miss the stunning formal gardens.
Midday
Browse the High Street’s independent shops:
Pallant of Arundel for homewares and curated gifts
Nineveh House for antiques
Castle Chocolates if you're in need of a sweet treat
Grab a light lunch at Motte & Bailey Café, or if the weather’s good, pick up something from Swanbourne Bakery and enjoy it by the river.
Afternoon
Head out for a scenic walk through Swanbourne Lake, or if you're feeling energetic, climb up to Houghton Forest for sweeping views over the South Downs.
Evening
Dinner at The Pig in the South Downs in nearby Madehurst is worth the short drive — or for something closer, The Black Rabbit offers hearty pub fare right by the riverside.
Return to the flat, light a candle, and enjoy a quiet, comfortable night in.
Sunday: Slow Starts & Local Finds
Morning
Have a slow breakfast in the flat or walk to Belinda’s Tea Room for classic English fare.
Late Morning
Before heading home, take a final stroll through the town and explore the Arundel Farmers Market (last Sunday of the month), or browse more antiques and vintage finds at Arundel Bridge Antiques.
A Weekend to Remember
Whether you're here for the history, the scenery, or just to take a breather from everyday life, Arundel has a way of staying with you. It’s a town best explored slowly, with a good coffee in hand and no particular rush.
We hope this little itinerary helps you get the most out of your stay — and if you ever need recommendations or directions, just ask. We've spent a lot of time wandering these streets and are always happy to share.
